Steel poles tend to be 100mm in diameter a 5.3m tall from the ground. They are cheaper to install than timber poles and will last around 15 years, depending on the condition of the ground they are installed in. One benefit of steel poles is that wires can be hidden within them, however rust can also accumulate on the outside—something that should be checked for regularly.
Treated timber poles are more expensive to install but can last twice as long as steel poles. They tend to be 250mm in diameter and 6.5m tall from the ground. Larger poles can also be installed when required. If you have a timber pole on your property, we recommend checking around the base for rot and termites. Wiring is fixed to the outside of these power poles.
